William Raleigh “Sonny” Chumney, Jr. age 82, of Lunenburg, passed away on May 24, 2018. He was the widower of Agnes Weaver Chumney. Sonny was a retired Dairy and Beef Cattle Farmer of Chumhurst Farm, where he was named Farmer of the Year in Lunenburg County. He was a Former Chairman of the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors, a member and Deacon of Mount Zion Baptist Church, an Army Veteran of The Korean Conflict, Graduate of Victoria High School, where he played football, baseball, and drove the school bus. Sonny also enjoyed horse shows and trained Tennessee Walking Horses. He is survived by his daughters, Carrie Lee Chumney Gorsuch and husband, Paul, Mary Agnes Harrison and husband, Anton, all of Chesterfield, brothers, Bernard Chumney and wife, Ardella of Lynchburg, Tommy Chumney and wife, Linda of Lunenburg, sister, Florence Spaulding of Chase City, grandchildren, Andrew Keller Gorsuch, Harrison Bouldin, Sylvia Harrison, great grandson, Hayden Bouldin, niece, Valerie Chumney, nephews, Thomas Chumney, Matthew Chumney, and Jonathan Chumney. Services will be held on Sunday, May 27, 2018 at 3:00 PM at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 73 Meherrin River Road, Chase City, VA 23924.  Wood Funeral Service, of Chase City, is serving the family.
